Autistic in NYC

Resources and new ideas for the autistic adult community in the New York City metro area.

Miscellaneous communication topics and techniques

Introduction

This page will list tutorials on various commmunication-related issues and techniques.

As always, don't take any of these tutorials as infallible, or as necessarily appropriate for all people and situations. Most of them were not written with autistic people in mind, and certainly not from a viewpoint accepting of our autistic traits. So, some techniques may need to be modified to be usable by some of us.

"Interpersonal effectiveness" techniques from Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

For more about DBT itself, see articles in Wikipedia, Web MD, and Psychology Today. See also the collection of DBT worksheets on the Therapist Aid site. DBT would probably be useful for many autistic adults, but only if the therapist is also knowledgeable about adult autism, which all too many therapists are not. Also, an autistic client would need the therapist to recognize that DBT techniques are not one-size-fits-all, but must be adapted to accommodate an autistic person's specific difficulties.
