ASD diagnostic evaluation services for adults
It's not easy to find psychotherapists who are qualified to diagnose autism spectrum disorder, especially in adults.
Note: Getting diagnostic evaluations is now even harder, if possible at all, during the CoViD-19 crisis, given that standard evaluation procedures require in-person interactions. Most of the places on the list below are probably not doing diagnostic evaluations currently, but you might still want to put yourself on a waiting list.
Below is a preliminary list of places where some members of local support groups obtained their diagnoses. At some point, probably after the CoViD-19 crisis has passed, this list will be updated to include more places and, for those already listed, more information about insurance, other reduced-cost options, etc.
University-based and medical-school-hospital-based clinics
Private clinics, group practices, cooperatives, etc.
Private individual psychotherapy or neuropsychology practices
Social service organizations/agencies for developmentally disabled people
- Lists will be added here soon.
If you can't find a place covered by your insurance, note that some of the below-listed places have low-cost options for clients who choose to participate in clinical training programs for psychology grad student "externs" and postdoctoral trainees. Being seen by an extern can drastically reduce the cost of an ASD evaluation, by a factor of ten or so.
University-based and medical-school-hospital-based clinics are listed first, because they are the most likely to have clinical training programs and thus offer low-cost extern/trainee options to clients. (Occasionally, though rarely, they may even offer free ASD evaluations to people who volunteer to participate in a research study.)
But note that some private psychotherapists and some private clinics, group practices, and cooperatives also do clinical training, as indicated in the relevant sections below.
