Societal (e.g. advocacy) groups led by members of the Autistic Peer Leadership Group (APLeG)
By "societal" groups, we mean groups that concern themselves with what's going on in society as a whole.
In the future, this will likely include at least one disability rights group or other advocacy group. We will start with just discussion groups, and then eventually create one or more advocacy/activist groups.
For now, we have just the following:
Autism Politics Discussion group - NOT an advocacy/activist group, but a group for discussion about autism-related societal and political topics.
General Societal/Political Discussion group - NOT an advocacy/activist group, but a group that aims to develop non-hostile ways to discuss our differing views on general (not autism-specific) societal and political topics.
Possible future groups might include, among other possibilities:
An advocacy group that aims to educate local politicians and government officials about the needs of autistic adults.1
A more general disability rights advocacy group.
A group that advocates for affordable housing.
Groups that advocate for the specific needs of autistic people of color.
A group that advocates for the specific needs of LGBTQ+ autistic people.
A group that aims to counteract the online harassment of autistic people, especially women.
Note to any members of the already-existing Autistic Advocates of NYC group who might happen to read this: Feel free to contact me, the author of this website. I have not contacted you because your organization's sole point of public contact is a Facebook page, and I refuse to use Facebook. See Warnings Against Online Harassment for some of the reasons why.
The blog Autism Against Fascism is not affiliated with this website or with the Autistic Peer Leadership Group.
Various autistic peer-led groups including support groups, career-oriented groups, and hobby-oriented social groups, led or facilitated by members of the Autistic Peer Leadership Group. Our newest group is the Autistic Women's Support & Social Group. All groups currently meet via text-based chat. Some groups will hopefully meet in-person after the COVID crisis is finally over with.
