Autistic in NYC

Resources and new ideas for the autistic adult community in the New York City metro area.

About this website

Autistic in NYC aims to become a generally useful collection of information for adults on the autism spectrum in the New York metro area. This website also aims to spark the further development of the autistic adult community to become more and more organized and more useful to more and more people.

Because the under-diagnosis and misdiagnosis of autistic adults (especially older people, women, people of color, and people from poor families) is a huge problem, one of the first aims of this website will be to put together a long and well-organized list of places where one can get an autism evaluation, together with information about insurance and other low-cost options. Later this site will add more general lists of autism-aware practitioners of various kinds.

This site will gradually add collections of links to useful information about autism, including primarily blogs (and some YouTube channels) by autistic people. In the meantime, here are some online support forums.

This site aims to document what currently exists of an organized autistic adult community in the NYC metro area. So far, this consists of a handful of support groups and social groups, both autistic peer-led and professional-led.

This site aims also to encourage the formation of other kinds of groups that don't yet exist in the autistic adult community, but would be similar to groups that do exist in other disability communities and/or in other minority communities generally. (See Longterm visions.)

Alas, autism intrinsically entails disabilities that make it difficult for us to organize groups of people. Hence we need to find systematic ways to make it easier. This site's author hopes to be involved in the creation of an online platform that will make it easier for the proposed future groups to get organized. Also this site will eventually have a collection of tutorial material for autistic would-be organizers.

This site's author (autobiography here) facilitates the Queens discussion group and maintains a Wordpress blog Autistic NYC.

Featured page:  Where to get an ASD evaluation as an adult.

It's not easy to find psychotherapists who are qualified to diagnose autism spectrum disorder, especially in adults.

On the above-linked page is a preliminary list of places where some members of local support groups obtained their diagnoses. Soon this list will be updated to include many more places and, for those already listed, more information about insurance, other reduced-cost options, etc.
